at the local level

so many people tend to overlook local politics and actions in pushing for critical progress.

how people live in a city or community plays a huge role in defining their worldviews, and what they choose to do with their perspective and their ideas plays an even bigger role.

education is a critical aspect of producing change on the local level. cities and communities have a responsibility to educate their residents on the importance of environmental conservation, which can mean anything from increasing bike lanes to cut transportation carbon emissions to encouraging people to use eco-friendly, water-saving landscaping. it can mean providing resources to help people transition to plant-based diets with lower carbon footprints. it can mean community fundraisers to support marine conservation efforts. there is so much that can be done to solve all these different problems—the possibilities are truly limitless.

teaching people to be aware of the impact they have on the health of the ocean is so important to make sure they do their part.

it’s crucial that everyone realizes the various environmental issues we face today, and it’s up to local organizations to help get the message out to everyone

community organizations inherently start off with a larger voice that can be amplified by effective use of social media and PSAs, especially in this current digital age.

cities and towns have a responsibility to get people involved in what’s going on in their communities. even though climate change and the effects of the phenomenon on the ocean might not seem like a pressing issue for someone living in a landlocked city like Omaha, Nebraska or Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, cities have a duty to teach them and raise awareness and show everyone that climate change will have an impact on each and every person and organism on this planet.

they also have the ability to promote their area’s natural resources and protect them by establishing and maintaining city parks—these allow people to better appreciate and enjoy nature, and therefore, become more passionate about protecting it.

communities have another advantage: they can use their platform to help get people together and teach them how to be advocates for the environment. even when someone might not understand the issues, the community is there. other people are incredible resources to learn from, and to work with.

working to implement successful environmental protection programs on a local scale can signal to other counties and cities that these ideas are effective and get people engaged. all it takes is one success to spur ten more in other places.
